Fawaka first used pro bono help via Pro Bono Connect seven years ago. Thiëmo Heilbron, founder of Fawaka, with whom we spoke, states: “In 2017 we received help from Pro Bono Connect for the first time. I like the broad range of legal questions we can get pro bono support for. When we were a smaller organisation Pro Bono Connect helped us receive legal support and they continued helping our growing organisation throughout the years.”

“It is wonderful that through pro bono help, civil society organisations are provided with a powerful solution for legal questions.”

As a growing organisation, Fawaka faces a range of legal challenges: “The legal challenges we encounter are quite broad, from questions about contracts with other organisations, to questions about tax legislation and adjusting deeds. We always look for solutions internally first but, for specialized legal advice we rely on legal help through Pro Bono Connect. The team of Pro Bono Connect is very thoughtful, but also knows when to take a step back. I like that, because then we can have direct discussions with the partner firm about our legal questions. I would definitely recommend Pro Bono Connect to other civil society organisations. Without their help we would not be where we are today, as an organisation and with our impact. For civil society organisations it is often difficult to get legal advice, and it can be quite expensive. It is wonderful that through pro bono help, civil society organisations are provided with a powerful solution for legal questions. That makes the law more accessible for civil society organisations.”
